Does catnip actually get cats "high"?
Share
You've seen the videos. Cat approaches innocent plant. Cat loses mind. Cat rolls, chirps, drools a little, knocks something off the counter — then walks away looking mildly offended by the whole experience.
So what's actually going on? Is your cat high? Having a spiritual experience? Both? Let's break it down.
The Plant Behind the Kitty Chaos
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family, and it's been giving cats the zoomies for centuries. The active compound is called nepetalactone — a naturally occurring oil found in the plant's leaves and stems. When your cat sniffs catnip, nepetalactone binds to receptors in their nasal tissue, triggering a response in the brain that researchers believe mimics the effect of feline pheromones.
Translation: catnip basically tells your cat's brain "everything is wonderful and you are the main character."
What Does it Actually Feel Like For Them?
Here's where it gets interesting. Behaviorally, the catnip response looks like a combination of playfulness and euphoria — rolling, vocalizing, rubbing their face in the plant, staring into the middle distance with unsettling confidence. Some cats get hyperactive. Others go full liquid nap mode.
The "high" lasts about 10 minutes. After that, cats become temporarily immune to catnip's effects for around 30 minutes — a built-in cooldown, if you will.
And importantly: catnip is completely non-addictive and safe. Your cat is not developing a habit. They're just living their best life on a schedule. While catnip is safe, vets recommend everything in moderation and making sure that your cat doesn’t exceed the recommended amount.
Not All Cats React to Catnip
Around 30% of cats simply don't respond to catnip at all, and it comes down to genetics. The sensitivity is inherited, so if your cat watches other cats lose their minds over catnip and remains completely unimpressed, they're not broken, they just don’t have the gene that makes them go nutty for catnip.
