No Tricks, Just Treats: How to Keep Your Pet Safe This Halloween

Halloween is all about the candy, costumes, and creepy decorations — but for our furry friends, it can be a real fright night! From tempting treats to spooky sounds, there are plenty of things that can spook (or harm) your pet if you’re not careful.

Don’t worry — we’ve got your back (and your pet’s tail)! Here are a few simple tricks to keep your dog or cat safe, happy, and ready to enjoy a howlin’ good time.

1. Keep the Human Treats Out of Reach

Chocolate, candy corn, and anything with xylitol are big no-nos for pets. Even small amounts can make them sick. So while you’re raiding your trick-or-treat stash, make sure it’s stashed high and tight!

If your pet’s giving you the “but what about me?” eyes — no worries. Treat them to something they can enjoy, like our Meaty Tenders for dogs or Catnip N Chill crunchy cat teats.

2. Prevent Door Dashers

With the door opening every few minutes for trick-or-treaters, it’s easy for pets to sneak out in all the excitement. Keep your pup or kitty safely tucked away in a cozy room while the doorbell rings all night long.

Pro tip: double-check their collar and microchip info — just in case they try a spooky escape act.

3. Costume Comfort Comes First

We love a good pet costume moment (bonus points for matching your pup!), but not every pet feels the same way. Make sure your pet’s costume fits comfortably and doesn’t restrict movement, breathing, or vision.

Skip any accessories with small pieces they could chew off, and if your dog looks more haunted than happy, maybe stick to a cute bandana instead.

4. Stay Visible on Night Walks

Halloween nights can get dark — and busy. If you’re taking your pet out after sunset, use a reflective leash, glow-in-the-dark collar, or light-up tag so they’re easy to spot.

And while those spooky decorations are fun for us, curious pets might see dangling cords or flickering candles as toys. Keep them out of reach to avoid any real-life horror stories.

5. Keep Things Calm and Cozy

Between doorbells, costumes, and strange noises, Halloween can be overstimulating for pets. Set up a quiet room with their bed, toys, and maybe a calming chew treat to help them relax.

Turning on some soft music or the TV can also drown out scary sounds (and distract from all those trick-or-treat smells).

A Safe, Spooky Night for All

With a few simple precautions, your pet can enjoy Halloween just as much as you do — minus the sugar rush. Keep the night full of cuddles, comfort, and (of course) plenty of Shameless treats.

Because the best kind of Halloween is one with no tricks — just treats!
